Emergency Warning

The NSW SES is advising people in the following area(s) to SHELTER NOW due to rising minor to possible moderate flooding:

  • Properties on parts of Windermere Road, Anambah Road, Valley Street, Durham Street and Maitland Vale Road

It is now too late to leave safely as evacuation routes are likely to be cut off. Seek shelter in a sturdy raised structure that can be safely accessed. You may now be trapped without power, water, and other essential services and it may be too dangerous for NSW SES to rescue you.

What are we expecting?

This Watch & Act Prepare to Isolate warning was first issued at 12.50pm Monday 20 May based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology.

NSW SES advises that you take shelter now. Keep updated for further warnings and advice via the Hazards Near Me App.

The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) may reach the moderate flood level (8.90 m) overnight Friday into Saturday as upstream flows arrive.

Based on this prediction, residents can expect to be isolated into early next week as river levels continue to rise.

This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.

What you need to do:

  • If floodwater comes inside, do not enter your roof cavity unless you have a safe exit point. Move to a higher point such as a kitchen bench or second storey
  • If you have a Home or Business Emergency Plan, follow it. Otherwise, have a conversation and plan for what you will do and take with you if you need to evacuate.
  • Gather your essential possessions. These might include mobile phone, charger, battery-powered radio, medicine, rain gear, warm clothes, blankets, baby and pet items, water, food, torch, something to attract attention, and valuables like photos and insurance or banking records.
  • Stay inside and be aware of rising floodwater.
  • Contact family members, friends, or neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, and your location, if safe to do so.
  • If you require resupply, contact NSW SES on 132 500
