What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises a complex low pressure system sits in western Bass Strait. Strong northwesterly flow will extend over northern parts of the state ahead of a trough which is currently crossing NSW. Flow will then shift westerly behind the trough as the low continues to move east through Bass Strait, bringing periods of gusty winds to elevated parts of the Great Dividing Range Wednesday through to early Friday.

For SOUTHERN and CENTRAL RANGES below 1900 metres from Katoomba to Braidwood: Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are forecast from early Wednesday morning.

For ALPINE AREAS in the western SNOWY MOUNTAINS and ACT: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts of around 110 km/h are forecast from Wednesday evening above 1900 metres. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 50 to 60 km/h with gusts to 90 km/h are possible below 1900 metres from late Wednesday.

BLIZZARD conditions are possible above 1400 metres from Wednesday evening. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.

This event may change quickly. NSW SES will monitor the situation and update warnings if the situation changes.

What you need to do:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, move indoors, bring children and pets with you.
  • Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
  • If safe to do so, secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds.
  • Grab your emergency kit in case you lose power or need to leave your home.
  • Ensure snow chains are carried in alpine areas.
